UWPD seeks information on recent incidents
As the semester comes to a close, UW–Madison Police are seeking information about three violent incidents that took place on and around campus on April 30.
Although none of the incidents involved members of the UW–Madison community, all three cases are under investigation by UWPD. If you have any information, please contact UWPD at (608) 264-COPS.
- Late on April 30 in the 600 block of Dayton St., a man reported being the victim of strong armed robbery while seated on Kohl Center property. He sustained injuries to his nose and eye. No suspect information is available, although more than one suspect was involved.
- In the second incident, near the 400 block of E. Campus Mall, also around the same time, a victim had a wallet containing $60, debit card and driver’s license stolen by three men. He was battered and sustained a jaw fracture and cuts.
- In the third incident in the 1000 block of W. Johnson Street, also around the same time, a victim reported being approached by a unknown white male of college age, with no shirt and blue shorts, around 6 feet tall with a thick build and brown hair, and was struck in the face.
It is unknown if any of the incidents are connected.
Police say the incident highlights a continued need for attention to personal safety. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to follow these safety guidelines:
–If you intend to drink, do so in moderation to avoid placing yourself in a position of increased risk.
–Do not resist a potential robbery. It is better to give up your belongings than be injured in a struggle.
–Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.
–Walk with a friend whenever possible.
–Take advantage of UW–Madison SAFEwalk and SAFEride programs available on and around campus. Call (608) 262-5000 for detailed information.
–Be aware of places along your path of travel that could conceal a criminal (shrubbery, building recesses, etc.). Avoid or keep a distance from these areas whenever possible.
–Make sure someone knows when you leave and when to expect you back.
–If you think someone is following you, cross the street. Head for a well-populated and well-lit area at night.
