100 years of getting physical at UW-Madison
The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the physical education program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, which later became incorporated into the Department of Physical Education and Dance.
In recognition of its long and proud history, the Department of Kinesiology is presenting “A Centennial Celebration: Honoring Our Physical Education Heritage, Celebrating Scientific Achievement, and Embracing the Wisconsin Idea” on April 1-2.
Friday, April 1, will feature a scientific symposium and poster session in the newly renovated Education Building on Bascom Hill. The symposium sessions will represent the eight content areas found in the Department of Kinesiology: athletic training, biomechanics, epidemiology/measurement, exercise physiology, motor control, occupational therapy and physical education. This daylong event features cutting edge research from leaders in their respective fields. On April 1, a gala celebration is scheduled at the Memorial Union Great Hall that includes a reception, dinner and program.
On Saturday, April 2, public lecture will celebrate the value of physical activity and empowerment through adventure. Lori Schneider speak of her journey to climb the highest peak on each continent, as well as climbing the mountains in her life while living with multiple sclerosis. She will address the value of physical activity, overcoming obstacles and living dreams.
A Wisconsin brat picnic will immediately follow this talk. The annual Poker Run hosted by Kinesiology Club students will be held at 9 a.m. on April 2.
