Berquam: Mental health support always available
In the wake of a Friday suicide attempt at Van Hise Hall, the Division of Student Life and University Health Services (UHS) are reminding members of the campus community that assistance is always available for those in need.
The situation was resolved successfully Friday evening by UWPD and other responding units and the individual is receiving treatment.
“We’re glad that this situation was resolved in a positive way, but it’s also a reminder for members of our community to know that we’ll do anything we can to support them,” says Dean of Students Lori Berquam.
“Whether you are a student who feels desperate, or a faculty member, staff or student who is concerned about another member of our community, there is help available to you,” she adds. “Show your care and concern for each other by being vigilant and utilizing the resources that are at your fingertips.”
UHS Counseling and Consultation Services is also an excellent, confidential resource for students. Mental health crisis services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling (608) 265-5600 (select option 9).
Students living in University Housing who are in need of support can also talk to their House Fellow or Residence Life Staff. These staff are trained and experienced in supporting students and connecting them with campus resources.
The Employee Assistance Office (EAO) is located in Room 266, Lowell Center, 610 Langdon St. and can be accessed from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. EAO services are available to all faculty, staff, LTE/project employees and their immediate family members or significant others. A topic-specific list of resources is available online. The EAO can be reached at 608-263-2987 or toll-free at 877-260-0281.
