Academic staff gallery features artwork of Georgene Pomplun

From scenes of rolling green hills and red barns in warm evening sunlight to the distinctive architecture of the UW campus, the oil paintings of Georgene Pomplun evoke the essence of life in south central Wisconsin.

This fall, artwork by Pomplun, event coordinator for the Office of the Chancellor, is featured in the Office of the Secretary of the Academic Staff.

Remodeling last year created a space to feature display framed, ready-to-hang two-dimensional artwork created by UW academic staff on four of the office’s walls, and Pomplun is the second artist chosen to display in the gallery. Last spring, the office featured watercolors by Helen Klebesadel.

Many of the scenes in Pomplun’s works are taken from the area around her home in rural Mount Horeb. Pomplun says she is drawn to painting landscapes with a human footprint — a road, a field, a structure in the distance.

“I love painting the land around me,” she says. “Wisconsin is so magical.”

She also enjoys painting many of UW’s most iconic buildings. Her interpretations of Washburn Observatory, Allen Centennial Gardens and the entrance to Camp Randall are part of the show.

Pomplun’s show runs through Dec. 3. The office, in Room 270 Bascom Hall, is open to the public from 9 a.m.–noon and 1–4:30 p.m.
