A baby great horned owl perches in a tree in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve near Goodnight Hall on March 18, 2010.
Great horned owls typically mate and nest in January and February in tree hollows or nests previously built by crows, hawks and even squirrels.
Earlier this year, Environmental Services staff conducted a tree trimming and removal project for the preserve in the Willow Creek Woods area without disturbing the owls. The understory has been opened up, making it easier for the owls to hunt for their prey.
