Graduate student international field research

The Division of International Studies announces the 2009–10 competition for Graduate Student International Field Research Awards. These awards enable Ph.D. students to conduct exploratory summer field research abroad to develop their dissertation topics and be more competitive for extramural fellowships. Awards are intended to cover airfare and living expenses abroad and are expected to average about $3,000 per student.

Proposals should be submitted to the International Institute member program to which the student is applying. Complete applications are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a UW–Madison doctoral program and have completed their M.A. or M.S., and priority will be given to pre-dissertation exploratory research. Please note that the award is not intended to cover language study. The competition is open to U.S. citizens and international students.

Classified Staff Child Care Grant

The Classified Staff Child Care Grant is a privately funded family child care award given to permanent UW–Madison classified employees who need assistance with paying for quality child care.

Permanent UW–Madison classified employees who demonstrate a high need for financial support for child care are eligible, and both part- and full-time employees are eligible. Typically, a total of $2,000 is disbursed annually among four to six families. Awards range from $250–$500.

Academic staff professional development

All academic staff with 50 percent appointments or more are invited to apply for fiscal year 2009–10 Academic Staff Professional Development Grants for conferences, training or other professional development projects that occur between Jan. 1–June 30, 2010. Proposals should focus on training and/or retraining to improve the UW–Madison academic staff members’ effectiveness in their current roles. Funding is not available for fundamental job-skill training, course development or salaries.

The funds can be used to send an individual to training or to bring a trainer to campus for work with a group of academic staff. Awards typically range from $200 to $1,000 or more, with an average award of $850.

This program is sponsored and administered by UW–Madison, and half of the funding for the proposed activity comes from the staff member’s department or unit. The Professional Development and Recognition Committee of the Academic Staff Assembly administers the review process by a committee of academic staff.

Application instructions are at Development Grant Information. Two informational brown-bag sessions will be held: noon today (Sept. 23) in the Memorial Union (TITU), and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, in Room 1325 of the Health Sciences Learning Center.

Applications must be submitted to department chairs or unit heads by Friday, Oct. 16. Academic staff with split appointments who propose projects that are related to all units for which they work have to secure the endorsement of each employing unit. Applications that have been approved by department chairs or unit heads will be forwarded to the office of the dean, director or equivalent, and then to the secretary of the academic staff.
