UWPD seeking info on Tripp Hall burglary

University of Wisconsin Police Department officials are seeking information about a burglary early Saturday morning inside Tripp Hall in the Lakeshore area.

The incident occurred after 3 a.m. when a suspect gained entry to a first-floor room by cutting a screen and entering through a window. After taking a laptop and other valuables, the residents awoke and the suspect fled.

The suspect is described as an African-American male, in his 20’s, 5′ 8″ tall, 160 pounds, short hair, dark coat, jeans and black shoes.

Residents of University Housing are again advised to be aware of this incident and remember the following basic safety info:

• Use caution when leaving windows open when you sleep.
• Keep your doors locked, especially when home or sleeping.
• Be wary of people who don’t appear to belong in the area.
• If you feel uncomfortable confronting a person who is following you into a residence hall, alert your hall staff, house fellow or UWPD by calling (608) 264-COPS or 911.
• Never prop open a building door or allow access to a stranger. University Housing has installed security cameras and monitors in its high-rise buildings, along with exterior locking and monitoring systems that notify staff when doors are ajar or propped open.
• Always carry your key when you leave your room.
• Do not open the door to someone who does not carry proper identification. University Housing custodial and maintenance staff members all wear identification tags with their photos and names.
• Report any crime or suspicion of a crime at once. If UWPD is contacted within the first five minutes, police have a better chance of finding a suspect.
