Berquam: Vandalism is unacceptable

Dean of Students Lori Berquam is asking members of the Greek community to step up vigilance around Langdon Street in response to recent acts of vandalism that have impacted two UW–Madison Greek houses in the past week.

Rocks or bricks were thrown at two houses during separate incidents late March 5-6. Several windows were broken, but no one was injured.

“Violence or vandalism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Berquam says. “It is important that we work hard to honor everyone’s right to live and feel safe in our campus community.”

In response to the situation, Greek leaders are exploring expanding the Langdon Street Neighborhood Watch program after spring break.

UW-Madison students found to be responsible for engaging in criminal behavior that impacts other members of the university community — on or off campus — can face sanctions up to and including suspension or expulsion from the university. This would come in addition to any applicable criminal charges.

“Greeks are leaders, and we are asking all members to show leadership in their own chapters and help us ensure that these ugly incidents will not happen again,” Berquam adds.
