Guitar professor featured at School of Music faculty series

The Faculty Concert Series at the School of Music presents guitarist Javier Calderón at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in Mills Hall. Calderón has chosen works by Bach and Spanish and Latin-American composers for his solo recital.

He begins with the “Suite for Guitar” by Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz (born mid-17th c.) arranged by Carlevaro and “Suite for Lute,” BWV 996 by J. S. Bach. He concludes the first half of the program with “Sonatine in A” by another Spaniard, Federico Moreno Torroba (1891–1982).

The balance of the program features works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazilian), Isaac Albéniz (Spanish), Roberto Bruno (b. 1956, Bolivian), Eduardo Caba (1890–1953, Bolivian), Eduardo Falu (b. 1923, Argentine) and Adrian Patiño (1895–1951, Bolivian).

Calderón, a native of Bolivia, has performed widely in the U.S., Europe, South America and the Far East. He has appeared as soloist with the St. Louis and Atlanta symphonies, the Minnesota Orchestra and at numerous international music festivals.

Three solo CDs, featuring the music of Bach, Schubert and Spanish composers, are available through the School of Music’s online CD store.He is the soloist for the premiere recording of the “Concerto No. 2 for Guitar and Strings” by Alan Hovhaness with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the direction of Stewart Robinson (Naxos 8.559336, released June 2008).
