Campus remembers Brittany Zimmermann

The UW–Madison community is remembering the late Brittany Zimmermann this week, ahead of what would have been her 22nd birthday on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Zimmermann was killed inside her downtown Madison apartment on April 2, and the investigation into her death continues. The Marshfield native was majoring in medical microbiology and immunology and planned to attend medical school.

Her aunt, Kim Heeg, is thanking the Madison community for its support during the past seven months and imploring anyone who has additional information to come forward.

“Last year at this time Brittany was looking forward to celebrating her 21st birthday with Jordan (her fiancée) and several friends,” she says. “The pictures from Nov. 15, 2007, remind us of her amazing smile, sparkling eyes, and beautiful spirit.

“On Nov. 15, 2008, we will find ourselves praying for answers as to who murdered this incredible young woman. Every day, we reflect on the past months, and we are undeniably grateful for the support we have received from the community.

“We ask that you contact the Madison Area Crime Stoppers with any information that may be helpful in solving this case. Life without Brittany has lead to daily tears and an empty heart and we will never stop searching or fighting for justice for her.”

Dean of Students Lori Berquam says that campus has spent recent months focused on safety and security, trying to turn its grief into positive action that can benefit the community.

“Brittany is still very much in our minds and hearts, “ she says. “Again, we’re asking anyone with recollections of seeing her on the morning of April 2 to come forward and provide information in any way they can.”

The private reward fund being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Zimmerman’s death continues to grow. It now sits at $14,000.

There would also be up to $1,000 in additional reward money available through Madison Area Crime Stoppers.
