Milestones

• Lisa Aarli has been named director of staff and programs for the Associated Students of Madison.
• Hans Adler, Department of German, has received the Halls-Bascom professorship.
• Timothy Baker, School of Medicine and Public Health, has received a five-year, $860,000 career scientist award from the National Cancer Institute. The grant will allow Baker to more fully concentrate leading groundbreaking research on tobacco use and its consequences.
• Farshid Feyzi has been named director of the Physical Sciences Laboratory.
• Pamela Herd, La Follette School of Public Affairs, has won a Rockefeller Foundation Innovation Award to Strengthen Social Security for Vulnerable Groups, which Herd will use to develop a proposal to improve Social Security benefits for older low-income women who raised children.
• Anthony Ives, Department of Zoology, has received the Plaenert-Bascom professorship.
• Kim Johnson, a researcher for the CHESS Program, has been named co-deputy director of the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment.
• Krishna Kurpad, a researcher with the Department of Radiology, received the Draper Technology Innovation Fund Award.
• Gia Mason is the new adviser for the Multicultural Student Center.
• Joie Schoonover is the new director of dining and culinary services on campus.
• The Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) has given its 2008 MERLOT Award for Exemplary Online Learning Resources to the authors of the book “Connecting Concepts,” including Robert Jeanne and Jan Cheetham, entomology, and Jean Heitz, zoology.
• Five new members join the Executive Committee for the coming academic year, including Nick Balster, soil science; Janet Batzli, Biocore; Wendy Crone, engineering physics; Erica Halverson, learning sciences; and Chris Lupton, academic technology. Members of the Executive Committee are faculty and staff who volunteer to serve a three-year term to help guide the Teaching Academy in its mission to provide leadership to the campus community around issues related to teaching and learning.
