UWPD distributes Chief’s Awards

The UW Police Department recently honored 15 members of the university community with Chief’s Awards for their tireless efforts to develop a campuswide policy on the use of mopeds.

The recipients were Kris Ackerbauer, assistant director of Facilities Planning and Management; Steve Amundson, director of Visitor & Information Programs; Margaret Bergamini, bus pass program adviser; Matthew Burczyk, program and planning analyst in Transportation Services; Keith Burdick, environmental health manager in Facilities Planning and Management; Elizabeth Carroll; Joseph Cooper, buildings and grounds superintendent in University Housing; Jeanine Critchley, risk management manager in Business Services; Ben Griffiths, senior university legal counsel; Rob Kennedy, program and planning analyst in Transportation Services; Patrick Litza, field services manager in Facilities Planning and Management; David Mattison, associate student services coordinator in athletics; Jeff Orwin, waste management supervisor in the Department of Environment, Health and Safety; Corey Spitzer; and Gene Turk, buildings and grounds superintendent for environmental services.

Police officers Jean VanDenBogart and Kristin Radtke and UWPD program and planning analyst Loralee Brumund received Community Service awards for their work on the moped policy.

The group initiated the establishment of a moped parking permit system and the creation of moped parking stalls. It also developed the “UW–Madison Moped Rules and Parking Map” pamphlet, participated in educational efforts and got local moped dealers involved in the project.

Six other civilians also received Chief’s Awards:

Nurse clinician JoAnn Brink and paramedic Terry Ritter for helping to save the life of a runner who suffered an apparent heart attack during the 2007 Crazylegs Classic. Brink was running in the event and Ritter was working at it. This was the second time Brink was honored by the department. She helped save the life of a runner in the 2002 Crazylegs event.

Daniel Denhartog, John Goetz and Dale Schutte of the physics department for their efforts to revive a man who had gone into cardiac arrest at Chamberlain Hall.

Kevin Dorsey and Kimberly Schulist for their efforts to revive a pulseless nonbreather at the Southeast Recreational Facility (SERF). Both were student employees at the SERF when the incident occurred.

Lifesaving awards went to police officers Dan Swanson, Kristin Radtke, Tricia Meinholz, Patrick Lau and Sgt. Mark Silbernagel. Swanson and Lau each received two awards related to separate incidents.

The department handed out nine Community Service awards and 17 Excellent Service awards to members of its staff.

Security supervisor Bill Vanderbloemen received a Meritorious Service Commendation.
