Cell phone drive, Clery report to benefit safety

Campus crime and safety continue to be serious concerns for the campus and city.

For the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the university is participating in a used cellular phone drive and encouraging all members of the campus community to download the most recent version of the annual campus safety report, commonly called the Clery Report.

If you own an inactive or outdated cellular phone, consider dropping it off at one of a handful of campus collection sites before Oct. 31 to benefit campus and city victims of dating and domestic violence.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals who want to help victims, but aren’t sure how to do that,” says Yolanda Garza, assistant dean in the Offices of the Dean of Students and chair of the University Subcommittee on Dating and Domestic Violence, which is organizing the effort. “This is a concrete way for people to get involved in a very worthy cause.”

Phones will be resold or recycled. The proceeds directly benefit Domestic Abuse Intervention Services  (DAIS) of Madison. Last year, $4,652.50 was raised, of which, $800 came directly from UW–Madison phone contributions. This year, DAIS hopes to increase the total to $10,000.

Cell phone users are encouraged to call their provider for instructions on clearing the phone of personal information before donating. Chargers need not be donated with the phones. Tax receipts are also available on request.
