Annual camp making music on campus
More than 350 middle school students arrived on campus Sunday, June 17, kicking off the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s annual Summer Music Clinic. For the next two weeks, the campus will be filled with the sounds of student bands, orchestras and choirs.
The clinic dates back to 1929 and is the second oldest music camp in the country. Middle school students will attend the clinic from Sunday, June 17 to Saturday, June 23, and 450 high school students will attend from Sunday, June 24 to Saturday, June 30.
All will participate in music lessons, classes, rehearsals, athletics, crafts and social activities. They’ll attend guest performances throughout the week, and conclude with their very own concert.
Final concerts are free and open to the public, as well as family and friends of campers. Concerts are on Saturday, June 23 and Saturday, June 30 at Mills Concert Hall, Music Hall and Morphy Recital Hall in the Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St., and Gordon Commons A1 Cafeteria on W. Johnson St. Various ensembles will perform between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
"This is one of UW’s outstanding pre-college programs," says Richard Mumford, director of public relations and concert manager at the School of Music.
