Tips for visitors attending the Dalai Lama’s Kohl Center appearance
People planning to attend the Dalai Lama’s Kohl Center (see map) appearance on Friday, May 4, are urged to follow these suggestions concerning carry-ins, parking and other details related to the event.
- The gates will open at 1:30 p.m. and, as is the case with athletic events, all patrons entering the facility are subject to search. It is recommended that ticket-holders arrive early rather than waiting until the last minute.
- For safety and security reasons, there are certain items that are prohibited inside the Kohl Center. They include, but are not limited to: food or beverage items; cans; bottles; coolers; thermoses; backpacks; large bags (gym, duffel and tote); luggage; strollers; laser pointers; banners; flags; signs; noisemakers; weapons; balloons or beach balls.
- The Office of Tibet is asking that cameras, video equipment and other recording devices (with the exception of news media equipment) and cell phones be left outside, and that pagers and watch alarms be turned off during the event.
- Storage facilities are not available for checking prohibited items, so they should be left at home or in the car.
- Limited parking will be available in the following university lots: 7 (Grainger Hall garage); 29 (21 N. Park St.); 46 (301 N. Lake St.): 91 (North Bedford Street), 83 (Fluno Center garage); and 88 (North Murray Street) for $5 per vehicle. View a map of these parking lots.
- Another option for parking within walking distance of the Kohl Center is the City of Madison's Lake Street parking ramp.
- Wisconsin Public Television will stream the Dalai Lama's address live on its Web site starting at 2:30 p.m. There will be a link to the live stream the univeristy’s home page as well. The Web-based stream will be archived and available for download at any time at http://www.wpt.org/dalailama/.
WPT will broadcast the Dalai Lama’s speech in its entirety at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8.
